I’m choosing to fly a version of the pride flag first introduced by the city of Philadelphia in 2017 to champion the LGBTQ POC of our community. . It is crucial that we learn, understand and teach the history and significance of these symbols in our communities so we can embrace and support our fellow humans. . Ready for a brief recap?😉 . 🖤Each stripe depicts one sector of the LGBTQ+ community. 🤎First created by GILBERT BAKER in 1978 following the election of Harvey Milk, the first gay person elected to office as San Francisco city supervisor. ❤️The flag was Baker’s response to the persecutors who had a whole code of emblems used to oppress people such as the pink triangle for those who were openly gay. 🧡Hand dyed and stitched in San Francisco the original flag was made up of 8 colours selected through colour therapy. 💛From the original flag pink (sex) and turquoise (magic) were dropped purely because of manufacturing limitations, resulting in the six colour flag we have grown to love. 💚Flags are part of the public domain and as such Baker has not profited from his creation. 💙It’s still illegal to be LGBTQ+ in 70 countries and you could be given the death penalty in 12. 💜This year marked 30 years since The World Health Organisation (WHO) declassified “homosexuality” as a mental disorder. .
